Michiji Tajima was born on July 2, 1885 in Aichi Prefecture.
He graduated from German Law Department, Tokyo University (1910).
He entered Aichi Bank and became chief of its Investigation Section, transferred to the Railway Board and was appointed chief of its Personnel Section. He returned to the Aichi Bank and later became managing director of the newly established Showa Bank (1927), ultimately becoming its president (1936). Then served successively as president of the Tokyo Koshinjo (Enquiry Office) and then Japan Scholarship Society. He was appointed director-general of the Imperial Household Board, after the end of the war.
