Graduated from Law Department, Tokyo University (1889).
He was appointed an official of the Agriculture and Commerce Ministry (1890). Was promoted to secretary of the Agriculture and Commerce Ministry (1892).
Gentaro was chief of the Engineering Affairs Bureau of the Agriculture and Commerce Ministry (1897), resigned from that post (1898) and became a director of Hypothec Bank of Japan. As an auditor of Yokohama Specie Bank, he made inspection tours of overseas branches of the bank (1899-1901). Became vice-president of Hypothec Bank (1902) and president (1911).
He was a president of Fuji Electric Power Company and president of Central Federation of Industrial Associations.
