When he was 18 he migrated to Brazil and settled in Curitiba as a merchant. He kept a steam-powered factory where he worked on grinding and toasting coffee beans under the "Rio Branco" brand, located on the spot where today stands the square called Praça Zacarias (square located in the center of Curitiba). He also owned a grocery store near Praça Tiradentes (also a square in the center of Curitiba, where the city was born).
He died an early death, when he was 39, on February 20, 1912.
