Vlrasoro, Miguel Angel was born in April 1900 in Santa Fé, Argentina.
Initially a student of Law at La Plata, Virasoro switched to Philosophy. Inns: Hegel, Fichte, Gentile and Schcler.
Taught Modern and Contemporary Philosophy at the University of Buenos Aires (1939-1955), then at Cordoba, Bahia Blanca and Mendoza. Regarded as one of the most distinguished Argentine thinkers of his generation.
The overriding aim of Virasoro’s philosophy is to synthesize the two currents of thought he regarded as fundamental. Hegelianism and existentialism. Existence has a dialectical character, manifest not only in its evolution but also in the bedrock metaphysical intuition by which we are aware of it. Our root experience of existence is of a finitude which at the same time reveals itself as absolute, as ‘infinite anxiety. Anxiety is to be distinguished from angst: whilst the latter is purely negative, anxiety has a positive aspect, connoting a hunger for existence, the immanent impulse and invariable process of self-creation. Existence is anxiety, whilst Being is satiety. and the ultimate substance of existence is freedom. Existence emerges from nothingness and chooses being: it is a free realization of itself, manifesting itself in the historical destiny of mankind. The most fundamental of all disciplines, therefore, is what Virasoro calls philosophical anthropology, the study of this destiny.
