He played college basketball for the University of Georgia and the University of South Florida. Mercer and Williams committed to play at Georgia in 2004, but Williams opted for the 2005 National Basketball Association Draft, ending up as the Philadelphia 76ers" second round pick. Mercer went on the play for the Georgia Bulldogs as one of the top Southeastern Conference (Securities and Exchange Commission) freshmen in 2005-2006.

= Torn anterior cruciate ligament Mercer had torn his anterior cruciate ligament and subsequently missed the last ten games of the season.
He underwent surgery on March 16, and was expected to be ready for the 2007-2008 season. = Suspension On October 11, 2007, Mercer was suspended from playing in the Bulldogs" first 15 games for failing to meet the school"s academic requirements.
He had violated the school"s new class attendance policy for student-athletes. On November 19, 2007, Mercer was kicked off the team for unspecified violations of team rules.
At the time, Bulldogs coach Dennis Felton said that Mercer was "being a disruption".
The dismissal came almost a week after University of Georgia police searched the dorm room he shared with a teammate who was arrested for having a pocket knife in the room. Transfer to University of South Florida
In November 2007, less than a fortnight after he was dismissed from Georgia, it was announced that Mercer would continue his collegiate basketball career at the University of South Florida. His other preferred destinations were Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.
In his South Florida debut on December 14, 2008, Mercer finished with 12 points and a team-high 3 steals in a loss to Niagara.
He managed only 4 games in the 2008-2009 season due to a season ending injury. He returned to the Bulls for the 2009-2010 season.
Mercer went undrafted in the 2010 National Basketball Association draft. In November 2010, he joined the Halifax Rainmen of Canada for their 2010 training camp.
He later made the roster for the 2011 PBL season.
On February 15, 2011, he left the Rainmen due to personal reasons. In November 2011, he joined Black Gold Illertal Weißenhorn of Germany for the rest of the 2011-2012 season. In December 2012, he signed with the Geelong Supercats for the 2013 SEABL season.
In mid-2013, he re-signed with the Supercats for the 2014 season.
However, on June 23, 2014, he was ruled out of the remainder of the season after rupturing his right Achilles tendon.
