Graduate Odessa Technical High School. Until 1890 studied at Saint St. Petersburg Forestry Institute. Expelled for taking part in student riots.
From 1887 active in revol movement. Helped found Marxist circles in Odessa and Saint St. Petersburg. 1891 first work published.
1892 arrested and exiled. 1901 helped found Saratov Social-Democratic Committee, which sided with newspaper “Iskra”. 1903-1904 underground revol work in Baku.
1904-1907 one of leaders of revol movement in Turkestan. Bolshevik; ed, newspapers “Samarkand” and “Russkiy Turkestan”. 1907 banished from Tashkent.
1908 worked underground in Saint St. Petersburg. Repeatedly arrested and exiled. Then on ed staff of “Literatumyy raspad”.
From 1910 in emigration. Member, Lenin’s Bolshevik Section in Paris. 1912-1913 ed, émigré "Parizhskiy vestnik”.
After 1917 February Revol returned to Russia. Fought in 19Î7 October Revol. After 1917 October Revol admin work in fuel and peat industry.
1930-1932 vicc-president, Academy of Arts. From 1936 director, All-Russian Cooperative Association “Artist” Publ House. Late 1930's arrested by People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs.
Communist Party member from 1901.
