Educated at a seminary. Graduated from the Military Infantry School in Kazan’ in 1899.
Close to the SRs. Participated in the Russo-Japanese war, 1904-1905. After the October Revolution 1917, offered his services to the Soviet government. November 1917, in charge of the defence of Petrograd against General Krasnov.
Later fought against the Ukrainians and Rumanians. Appointed commanderin-chief of the Eastern front, June 1918. After the left-wing SR revolt in Moscow, staged an uprising in Simbirsk (now Ulianovsk).
Shot resisting arrest by the Bolsheviks.
No religious basis is needed in order to display ethical behavior.
The emphasis on peaceful coexistence doesn’t mean that the Soviet Union accepted a static world with clear lines. Socialism is inevitable and the "correlations of forces" were moving towards socialism.
