From early 1890’s active in revol movement. 1898 joined Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party. Several times arrested by Tsarist authorities.
1903, after 2nd Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party Congress, sided with Mensheviks. 1907 emigrated and lived in Paris, continuing Parly, lit and propaganda work. During World War 1 adopted internationalist stand.
Just prior to 1917 October Revol returned to Russia. 1921-1923 Collegium member, People's Commissariat of Nationalities. 1919-1920 Revol Military Council plenipotentiary on Southern Front.
1920, at Congress of Peoples of the East, elected to Action and Propaganda Council. From 1921 head, All-Russian Sciences Association of Oriental Studies. First rector, Moscow Institute of Oriental Studies.
Wrote numerous works on imperialism, history of national-liberation movement in Eastern countries (Chinese and Iranian revol of early 20th Century, national-liberation movement in Turkey in early 1920's, activities of Turkish Communist Party, etc).
Religion doesn't give equal treatment to women and therefore contradicts basic human rights.
