Lived with his parents in Dresden until 1957. Returned to Leningrad, wherefhe studied art in several art schools. Expelled from all of them.
Became a famous non-conformist artist. Led the clash between artists and the Soviet cultural authorities. Several arrests. At one time, locked up in a psychiatric hospital.
Eventually left the Soviet Union in 1971. Lived in Paris, and became an instant commercial success. Financed a glossy art magazine, Apollon-77, in which he introduced many new names in art and literature.
Moved to California in 1981. Very successful in the USA. Lives between Paris, Los Angeles and New York.
