From 1912 worked for Geological Committee. Did research in Baykal Region, Transbaykal Region, Irkutsk Basin, et cetera 1920-1930 also lecturer, from 1930 professor, Leningrad University.
Main works deal with gcotcctonics. Devised theory of the forms of tectonic movements. Introduced the principle of vertical movements connected with assumed compression and expansion of the Earth’s matter.
Proved the importance of oscillatory movements in the formation of the Earth’s structure. Explained stratification and revised theory of geosynclines. Wrote regional studies on the connection of minerals with tectonic structures.
One of the first to map geotcctonic zones of the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics.
