1913-1917 studied at History and Philology Faculty, Saint St. Petersburg University. 1921 graduate History and Philology Faculty, Tomsk University.
1921-1922 taught at Chair of Russian History, Tomsk University. From 1922 taught at secondary school, then colleges in Leningrad. From 1934 senior associate, from 1957 chairman, Leningrad Branch, Institute of History, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences.
Foreign many years head, Chair of Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics History, Leningrad’s Pokrovskiy Teachers’ Training Institute. After this was amalgamated with Leningrad’s Herzen State Teachers’ Training Institute in the late 1950’s, he worked as professor at the latter. Specialized in the history of the peoples of Centr Asia and economics history of Russia.
From 1957 member, editorial board, journal “Istoricheskiye zapiski”.
