As a general major of artillery in June 1941 he became chief of artillery of the Western Front. After December of that year he was chief of the combat training directorate of the main directorate of the chief of artillery, and from June 42 he was Red Army deputy commander of artillery. Chistyakov became a marshal of artillery in 1944. The next year he was commander of artillery under the High Command of the Far East.
