Sergey Bogatinov was born on the 25th of October, 1956 in the village Oktyabrsky, Ustyansky District, Arkhangelsk Region, Russian Federation.
In 1978 Sergey graduated from the Leningrad Higher Artillery Command School.

In 1978 he graduated from the Leningrad Higher Artillery Command School named after Red October, in 1989 – the Kalinin Military Artillery Academy, in 1998 – Military Academy of the General staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
Since 1978, he served in the Kiev and Turkestan Military Districts as Platoon Commander, Commander of Battery, Chief of Staff -Deputy Commander, Commander of an Artillery Division. In 1980 and 1986 he participated in the fighting on the territory of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.
Since 1989, he was the Commander of self-propelled Artillery Division, since 1991, he was the Deputy Commander of the Guards Gun Artillery Brigade in the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany.
Between 1994-1996 he was the Commander of the Training Artillery Brigade of the Moscow Military district. Since 1998, he was the Deputy Chief of Rocket Troops and Artillery, then Chief of Staff Missile Forces and Artillery of Siberian Military District.
Since 2002,he was the Deputy Chief , since 2006, he was the Chief of Staff – 1st Deputy Chief of Missile Forces and Artillery of the Armed forces of the Russian Federation . On 9 October, 2008 he was appointed Chief of Missile Forces and Artillery of the Ground Forces of the Russian Federation.
He is married and has a daughter and a son, who is an officer.
