Joined the Red Army, 1933, and the Bolshevik Party, 1939. Successful tank brigade commander during World War II (capture of Lvov, storming of Berlin, capture of Prague). Twice Hero of the Soviet Union.

General Inspector of the Ministry of Defence, 1969-1972.
