From 1797 to 1823 Mikhail Matveyevich was in the military service. Participated in the Russian-Turkish (1806-1812), Russian-Swedish wars (1808-1809), Patriotic War 1812 (including the Battle of Borodino) and foreign campaigns of the Russian army of 1813-1814. In 1812-1814 he kept a log of combat operations of his regiment.
In 1807 - was awarded the Cross "For Victory at Preussisch-Eylau", in 1812 he was awarded the Order of St. George, IV degree, in 1813 - was awarded The Imperial Order of St. Anne, in 1814 - was awarded the Golden Weapon "For Bravery", in 1814 - was awarded the Order of Saint Vladimir (III degree), in 1814 - was awarded the Medal "For the Capture of Paris."
