Mikhail Pavlovich studied at the Voronezhsky Mikhailovsky Cadet Corps (1855-1863). He graduated from the 2nd Moscow Cadet Corps; he also graduated from Moscow University, Faculty of Law (1875).
In the second half of the 1870s, Mikhail Pavlovich was a war correspondent for "Russkiye Vedomosti". From 1877 to 1878 he also wrote for "World Illustration" and "Illustrated London-News". Mikhail Pavlovich was a chairman of the commercial and industrial department of the Society of Oriental Studies; president of the General Congress of Representatives of Russian Railways.
Mikhail Pavlovich was a member of the Petrograd city committee of the All-Russian Union of Cities, a member of the Council of the Russian Commercial and Industrial Bank, "Progressive Circle", representative of private railways on the Rail Council of the Ministry of Railways.
