Mitoku Ishida was born in 1587.
Mitoku Ishida lived during his early childhood in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture, and later moved to Edo where he earned his livelihood by composing humorous waka poems.
Came into prominence with the publication of his book of poems titled "Gogin Gashu" (1661). Later studied haiku poetry under Teitoku Matsunaga and came to be ranked amongst the five great haiku poets of the Edo Period with Bokuyo Nakarai and others. Another of his popular books is "Hitomotogusa".
