Mitsukage Ono was made official headman of representatives of merchants engaging in foreign trade (1876). He was appointed president of the Yokohama Specie Bank upon its establishment. After retiring from the post, he started the Ono Shoten trading house which engaged in raw silk trade. He participated in the founding of the Yokohama Fire Insurance, Yokohama Railway and Yokohama Dock companies. He was appointed a member of the House of Peers (1910).
