Ilyas, Mohammad was born on July 27, 1950 in Meerut, India. Son of Hagi Shahabuddin and Aliman Begum.


Bachelor of Science, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, 1968. Master of Science in Physics, Aligah (India) Muslim University, 1970. Doctor of Philosophy in Space Physics, Adelaide (Australia) University, 1976.


University research grants fellow Adelaide (Australia) University, 1971-1974, tutor in physics, 1974-1976. Lecturer in physics University of Science Malaysia, Penang, 1976-1989, associate professor physics, 1989-1995, professor in physics, since 1995, founder head astronomy and atmospheric research unit, 1990-2000. Founder director Sheikh Tahir Astronomical Center, Penang, Malaysia, since 1995.

Member United Nations Environment Programme Science and Effects Panels on Ozone Layer Depletion United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs United Nations Space Science and Technology Education Centers.   • Achievements include research in atmospheric ozone, solar/lunar ultraviolet radiation, calendrical astronomy, physics of lunar visibility, Islamic mathematical astronomy, alternative energy using sounding rockets, scientific balloons, ground based instruments, computer modelling. Establishment of Astronomy and Atmospheric Science Research unit University of Science Malaysia. Initiated the establishment of Sheikh Tahir Astronomical Center, Penang,1988.
