Chee-Beng Tan was born on April 29, 1950 in Batu Pahat, Johor, Malaysia.
In 1974 Chee-Beng graduated from the University of Science Malaysia and received his Bachelor of Arts degree. He received a degree of Master of Arts from Cornell University in 1976. Also in 1979 he graduated from Cornell University and received a Doctor of Philosophy degree.
From 1979 to 1980 Chee-Beng Tan worked as a Lecturer at the University of Singapore and at the University of Science, Malaysia,1980-1985. He worked as an Associate Professor of Chinese studies department at the University of Science, Malaysia from 1986-1989 and also Chee-Beng Tan was an Associate Professor of anthropology and sociology department at the same university, 1989-1996. Since 1996 he held a position of a Professor of anthropology department at Chinese University Hong Kong. Chee-Beng Tan was appointed as a Professor at the School of Sociology and Anthropology, Sun Yat-sen University in September 2012.
