He received an academic and business education. He was an Episcopalian. Corse was a captain of the 1st Virginia Regiment during the Mexican War.
He seems to have served as a bank clerk in Alexandria during the 1840s. After seeking gold in California, he became an Alexandria banker in 1856. In 1860, he organized the Old Dominion Rifles, and he entered the Confederate Army as colonel of the 17th Virginia Regiment.
Corse served in James Longstreet’s Brigade during the battle of First Manassas in July 1861 and in the battles of Yorktown, Williamsburg, Seven Pines, and the Seven Days in 1862, winning the praise of both Longstreet and Lee. In August and September of that year, he was wounded at Second Manassas and again at South Mountain. Upon his recovery, he was promoted to brigadier general on November 1, 1862.
He was given a brigade in Pickett’s Division and later served in the Pennsylvania campaigns of 1863-1864, in southwest Virginia, and in eastern Tennessee. In 1864, he opposed General Benjamin F. Butler on the James River, and he participated in the Virginia battles of Petersburg, Richmond, Dinwiddie Court House, and Five Forks. He was captured on April 6, 1865, during the battle of Sailor’s Creek and was confined until August 1865.
After his parole, he returned to banking in Alexandria.
