Mordeckai Amitai was born on June 8, 1914, in Balti, Republic of Moldova. As a child moved with his parents to Romania.
While still in elementary school, Mordeckai Amitai stood out and was an outstanding student, edited the elementary school newspaper, and translated a song by Lermontov into Hebrew at the age of six. At the age of 13, he joined the Hashomer Hatzair. After graduating from high school he moved to Bucharest to study law at the university, but after a few months, he left his studies due to severe financial problems and returned home.
Mordeckai Amitai was a translator from Yiddish, Rumanian, etc. He was an editor of various books. Mordeckai Amitai wrote, produced mass performances, broadcast lectures on radio, etc.
In 1943 Mordechai Amitai joined the daily newspaper "Al Hamishmar", and was the first editor of the children's supplement "Mishmar Leilim". He published songs, stories, and translations for children in "Mishmar Yeladim". He also applied to the children's literature section of the Hashomer Hatzair kibbutz publishing house, "Poalim Library".
