Background
Publicist. Son of Sendayii Takanashi a retainer of the Tokugawa Shogunate. He was born in Edo. Learned English in Nagasaki and Yokohama in his youth. In the civiI war of the Meiji Restoration (1868), he went to Aizu (Fukushima Prefecture) and fought against the Imperial forces. After the restoration, he was employed by the Finance Ministry and then by the Justice Ministry. After traveling in Europe, he became a Senate secretary and founded the Qmeisha Society which promoted civil rights. After resignig from government service (1879) started the Tokyo-Yolwhoma Mainichi Shimbun newspaper and worked for the Kaishinto (ProgressiYe) Party. Was president of the Tokyo Prefectural Assembly.
