Moriya Kasugano became a professional wrestler at the age of 18 under the name of Tochigiyama. He was honored with the title Yokozuna (grand champion) in 1918. After a final victory in the spring bouts retired from the ring and took to himself the name by which he is known now.
Moriya Kasugano was a Director of the Nippon Sumo Kyokai (Japan Sumo wrestling association).
