Moriyoshi Nagaoka was born on October 22, 1843.
Assumed the family name of Nagaoka and worked for the cause of restoring the Imperial regime since before the restoration, often proceeding to Kyoto at Imperial orders. In the civil war of the Meiji Restoration (1868), he participated in the campaign in northeastern Japan against recalcitrants. Studied in Europe and America (1872-79). Was appointed Minister to Holland (1880). Was a member of the Senate and later the House of Peers. Together with Atsumaro Konoe, he founded the Toa Dobunkai Society and became its vice-president. The society worked for cultural interchange with China.
Sixth son of Narimori Hosokawa, Lord of Kumamoto (Kumamoto Prefecture).
