Background
Narushima Motonao was born in 1778 in Japan. He was commonly called Kuninosuke. His pseudonyms were Togaku and Suiroku.

Career
He served the Tokugawa Shogunate.
He started compiling Tokugawa Jikki, a chronicle of the Tokugawa Dynasty, under the supervision of Jutsusai Hayashi, head Shogunate official in charge of learning (1809) and completed the work in 1849.
A historian as well as a noted stylist, he wrote a geography of the province of Mikawa, where the Tokugawa family originated.
Also he wrote a book on the Ryukyu (Loochoo) Islands Tokugawa Jikki, in 516 volumes, records the happenings under the first 10 Shogun of the Tokugawa Dynasty, Ieyasu to Ieharu.
