Hsu Mou came to Shanghai to enter business at the age of 14. He was a Chinese manager of Messrs. Moutrie and Co., Shanghai, in 1882.
Besides his numerous activities, he also served in the following organizations: a director of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, Shanghai, chairman of the Chi Seng Hospital, Shanghai, director of the Jiangwan Electric Works, director of the Chinese, Ratepayers' Association; promoter and director of the China Industrial Training Works and manager of the Bank of Jiangwan.
Mr. Hsu organised the Chapei Volunteer Corps, Shanghai, during the 1911 Revolution. He was a promoter of the Anti-Kidnapping Society at Shanghai with branch offices at the various ports. Hsu Mou organised the International Famine Relief Committee in Shanghai in 1913. He served on the International War Relief Committee since 1915.
