Background
STANNARD, Mistress Arthur was born on January 13, 1856 in New York Daughter of late Reverend Henry Vaughan Palmer, Rector of Saint Margaret’s, New York G. great-granddaughter of Hannah Pritchard, the celebrated actress to whose memory a monument was placed in Westminster Abbey, next bust of Shakespeare, by public subscription.
Career
Since April 1874, when her first story appeared in print, Mistress Stannard has been a prolific contributor to fiction-using periodicals, chiefly stories of army life. Referred to by Ruskin as “ the author to whom we owe the most finished and faithful rendering ever yet given of the character of the British soldier”.
