Mukhtar ASHRAFI, USSR Composer. Professor; Artistic Director and Chief Conductor, Uzbekistan Theater of Opera and Ballet, since 1930; Director, Tashkent Conservatory, since 1947; board member, USSR and Uzbekistan Union of Composers, since 1948; Popular Artist of Uzbekistan Soviet Socialist Republic since 1939 and USSR since 1951. Stalin Prizes, 1943, 1952; two Order of Red Banner of Labor; Order of Lenin; Badge of Honor; two medals.
Education
1928 graduated Bukhara Musical Technicum. 1930 graduated Uzbekistan Research Institute for the Study of Music and Choreography, Samarkand. 1934-1936 attended composition class, Moscow Conservatory.
1948 graduated Conducting Faculty, Leningrad Conservatory, as external student.
Career
Continued his studies at the Leningrad Conservatory under M.Steinberg, 1941-1943. Began composing and conducting in 1930. Artistic director of Samarkand Radio, 1929-1930.
Musical director, 1930-1947 (with intervals). Director of the Uzbek Theatre of Opera and Ballet (Navoi Bolshoi Akademicheskii Teatr UzSSR). Director of operatic training at the Tashkent Conservatory, 1947-1962.
Chief conductor with Tashkent Opera and Ballet Theatre. Professor in 1953. Director, artistic director and chief conductor of the Samarkand Theatre of Opera and Ballet, 1964-1966. Director, artistic director and chief conductor of the Tashkent Bolshoi Theatre.
Director of the Tashkent Conservatory from 1971.
