Muneyoshi Naganuma was born in 1635 in Harima Province (Hyogo Prefecture), Japan.
He served Mitsushige Matsudaira in Harima at first and later went to Edo. Noting that the traditional Koshu school of strategy had many drawbacks, he originated his own strategy and became well known for his book propounding it. Mitsumasa Ikeda, Lord of Bizen Province (Okayama Prefecture), so admired it that he ordered all his retainers to study under Muneyoshi. Naoaki Matsudaira, Lord of Harima, employed him with respect and made him one of his senior retainers. After five years' service, he retired to Fushimi near Kyoto.
