Graduated from the 2nd State School of Ballet in Petrograd, 1925. Pupil of N. Legat and A. Vaganova.
Leading dancer with the Bolshoi Theatre, 1925-1928.
Appeared in show business from 1931. Choreographer from 1941 (in ensembles of the Siberian military district and the Karelian front). Choreographer for the Moscow Variety Stage (Mosestrada) from 1943.
Artistic director of the ballet department there, 1945-1948, and concurrently of the Russian People’s Choir of the Kalinin Philharmonic Society, 1945-1948. Artistic director and producer of all programmes of the Academic Choreographic Ensemble, Berezka, 1948. Creator of a new choreographic style based on folk and classical dancing.
Gold medallist, the Joliot-Curie Prize, 1959.
