Naganori Asano was born on 28 September 1667. He was the son of Asano Nagatomo; his childhood name was Mataichiro.
In 1675 he became lord of the domain with a revenue of 53,500 koku. In the fourth month of 1701, he and Date Muneharu were ordered by the shogunate to supervise the reception of an imperial messenger.
He requested Kira Yosbinaka, who was in charge of protocol involving the shogunate and court, to instruct him in the necessary etiquette. Insulted by the manner in which Kira treated him, however, Naganori drew his sword and severely wounded Kira. Kira, who was proud of his family and station, was said to have tended toward arrogance and to have been particularly unpopular among the lesser daimyo.
Since the incident took place within Edo Castle and violated the strict shogunate ban on the drawing of swords within the castle, Naganori was ordered to commit seppuku the same day and his lands were confiscated. Oishi Yoshio, chief retainer of the Asano family, and others of the domain asked the shogun to allow Naganori’s younger brother Nagahiro to inherit the Asano estate, but permission was refused. At the end of the following year, Oishi and his followers renged the death of their lord by attacking and killing Kira in his residence in Edo.
This is the famous revenge of the so- called Forty-Seven Ronin, celebrated in kabuki, puppet drama, and popular literature of the Edo period and still one of the best-known incidents in Japanese history.
