Nagaru Shimokobe was born in Yamato Province, Nara Prefecture in 1624.
An intimate friend of Priest Keichu, he was known as a pioneer of fukkogalcu, or learning of ancient Japanese language. Also composed waka. He did not serve any of the powerful men who asked for his service. Wrote commentaries on the Manyoshu Anthology.
His poems were collected in Banka Wakashu (Late Flower, Collected Waka Poems) which was edited by Priest Keichu after his death.
He never married and lived as a recluse.
