Nagataka Tosa was born in 1270 in Japan. He was the fourth son of Ienobu.
Nagataka Tosa became a priest under the name of Kaikan and was eventually elevated to the rank of Hogen (high priest). He painted mostly flowers, birds and animals. Some of which still in existence bear the dates of the Bunei (1264) and Koan (1279) eras and it is presumed that he lived during that time.
