Nagatsune Okura was born in Bungo (Oita Prefecture).
Nagatsune Okura went to Osaka (1796) and subsequently inspected agricultural conditions in various provinces. He experimented with many culture methods. He went to Edo (1810) to live for several years but returned to Osaka again. He served in the Tawara Clan in Mikawa Province (Aichi Prefecture) and the Hamamatsu Clan (Shizuoka Prefecture).
He wrote altogether 20 books on agriculture for the benefit of farmers. In his ideas, he was influenced by Chinese books on agriculture and Dutch learning of his time. His teachings, however, were based largely on his ·own observation and the information he derived from contact with old farmers during his many inspection trips. They were therefore useful and practical.
