(Case Callahan isn't a star swimmer like his sister, Quinn...)
Case Callahan isn't a star swimmer like his sister, Quinn. He's not a champion horse trainer like his father or a popular stage actor like his mother. Still, Case is determined to make his mark. But one effort after another - talent show, science fair, junior horse show - is a terrible failure. It isn't until Case comes upon a lost dog that he finds his path to success. The dog, whom Case names Noah, is certainly one of a kind - what another golden retriever can answer the telephone and put dishes in the dishwasher? Together Case and Noah seem destined to become a trophy-winning team. Noah, however, is so smart because he was trained to be a service dog, and when Case learns about his dog's past, he realizes there is more than one way to be a winner. With thoughtful black-and-white illustrations, this is the perfect story for any child who has struggled to discover his talents - and for any dog lover.

Nancy Patterson was born on April 27, 1944, in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. She is the daughter of Jack Hunter, Sr. and Willeyne Patterson.
Nancy holds a Bachelor of Arts (1965) and Master of Arts in Teaching (1971) from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She also attended Hollins University.
Nancy Ruth Patterson served as a teacher and administrator with Roanoke City Schools from 1966 to 1999. Upon her retirement, she joined the adjunct faculty of the University of Virginia, teaching graduate courses in literature for children and young adults as well as memoir writing.
She wrote her first novel, The Christmas Cup in 1980, as a wedding gift for her brother, Jack Hunter Patterson, Jr. The story of Ann Megan McCallie, spelling bee champion, and favorite target of bullies, displays the events that unfold after she foolishly buys an old, ugly milkshake cup at an auction. Nannie, her wise grandmother, helps Megan turn that unwanted cup into a vessel of good cheer as together they secretly find a way to make "memories in a milkshake cup." Along the way, Megan learns to appreciate those who seem different and to be on the look-out for selfless acts of kindness. She learns that sometimes, it's not the gift, but the giving itself, that makes life special.
Nancy's second book The Shiniest Rock of All (1991) is about fourth-grader Robert Morris Reynolds, who cannot say his name properly because he has trouble pronouncing his R's, works hard with a speech therapist to overcome his problem.
Patterson's book A Simple Gift (2003) is about 10-year-old Carrie O'Connor, who wants to be an actress. After starring in her class play at her New York City school, she convinces her parents to let her audition for a theater in North Carolina that is doing a play based on a book written by her mother. A plucky audition gets Carrie in the cast, but before the opening night, she makes a blunder so big it threatens to topple the whole production.
Patterson is now a visiting associate professor of English at Hollins University's graduate program in children's literature.
