Narabayashi Soken was born in 1802. He was the second son of Eitetsu, Dutch school physician.
On intimate terms with Philipp Franz von Siebold, German physician, he served Lord Nabeshima together with his father and brothers. When an epidemic of small pox occurred in Hizen, he intro¬duced vaccination at the command of Nao-masa (Kanso) Nabeshima, his lord. He vaccinated his son first and then many other children. This was the first time vaccination was practiced in Japan.
