He dealt in lumber at Reiganjima, Fukagawa, in downtown Edo. His father was a cart-puller. Apprenticed to a lumber merchant's, he became an independent dealer at the age of 27. He made a great fortune by purveying lumber to the Nikko Shrine when its edifices were repaired. He competed with Kibun in squandering money in Yoshiwara gay quarters. When his beloved courtesan, Taraagiku of Yoshi- wara died, he gave a fabulous funeral to her.
