Nariaki Takeda was born in 1827 in Iyo (Ehime Prefecture) of the Osu Clan.
He studied Dutch navigation and was considered a master craftsman.
Nariaki Takeda was once military magistrate at Hakodate (Hokkaido) and an instructor at Kaiseisho, predecessor of the present Tokyo University. In 1861 as captain of the Kameda Maru he sailed up the Amur River as far as Nikolaevsk and wrote a book on his experiences. After the Meiji Restoration (1868) he became a colonel in the artillery and also taught at the Military Academy.
