Nathan Appleton was born on October 6, 1779 in New Ipswich, New Hampshire, United States. He was the seventh son of Isaac Appleton of New Ipswich, New Hampshire, and Mary (Adams) Appleton.
Nathan Appleton was educated in the New Ipswich Academy, and in 1794 entered mercantile life in Boston, in the employment of his brother, Samuel (1766 - 1853), a successful and benevolent man of business, with whom he was in partnershipfrom 1800 to 1809.
When Nathan Appleton reached 21 in 1800, he became a full partner in the business, which continued until 1809.
The success of that industry propelled families such as the Appletons, the Lowells, and the Jacksons to positions of great prominence in the New England economic and social world.
He was one of two lobbyists chosen by the merchants of Boston to present their views to Congress during the War of 1812, and he served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives for 6 years between 1815 and 1827.
In his political life he fought strongly for the principles of high protective tariffs and hard currency.
Appleton was among the influential men who did so much to shape the basic institutions of the United States prior to the Civil War.
He co-operated with Francis C. Lowell and others in introducing the power-loom and the manufacture of cotton on a large scale into the United States, a factory being established at Waltham, Massachusetts, in 18x4, and another in 1822 at Lowell, Massachusetts, of which city he was one of the founders.
His son, Thomas Gold Appleton (1812 - 1884), who graduated at Harvard in 1831, had some reputation as a writer, an artist and a patron of the fine arts, but was better known for his witticisms, one of which, the oft-quoted " Good Americans, when they die, go to Paris, " is sometimes attributed to Oliver Wendell Holmes.
He published some poems and, in prose, Nile Journal (1876), Syrian Sunshine (1877), Windfalls (1878), and Chequer-Work (1879).
Appleton was a successful merchant, one of the owner of the Waltham mill, which employed the first power loom ever used in the United States. He was also a member of the general court of Massachusetts in 1816, 1821, 1822, 1824 and 1827. In 1831-1833 and also 1842 he served in the United States House of Representatives.

Reason did not dictate to him a belief in the immaculate conception, the Athanasian Trinity, or Calvinistic dogmas, the utter iniquity of slavery, or the wickedness of possessing riches; but the spirit within him commanded Nathan Appleton to live in frankness and candor and to face the unknown with quiet courage.

Nathan Appleton was a member of the Academy of Science and Arts, and of the Massachusetts Historical Society.
Appleton was married to Maria Theresa Gold. The couple had five children. Maria Theresa Appleton died of tuberculosis in 1833. Nathan Appleton remarried on January 8, 1839, to Harriot Coffin Sumner, the daughter of Jesse Sumner, a Boston merchant, and Harriot Coffin of Portland, Maine. They had three children.
