Bangs, Nathan was born on May 2, 1778 in Stratford, Connecticut, United States. Son of Lemuel and Rebecca (Keeler) Bangs.

Career

Itinerant preacher, Upper Canada, 1801. Admitted to Methodist Conference as elder, 1804. Built substantial Methodist community in Quebec, Canada, 1804-1812.

Presiding Methodist elder in New York State, 1812-1820. Worked for separation church and state in Connecticut. Agent Book Concern (publisher Methodist literature), New York, 1820-1836.

Editor Methodist Magazine and Methodist Quarterly Review in 1820’s. Founder Methodist Missionary Society, circa 1830. Acting president Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut, 1841.

Author: Errors of Hopkinsianism, 1815. Vindication of Methodist Episcopacy, 1820. History of the Methodist Episcopal Church, 4 vols., 1838-1840.
