Background

Kimball, Nathan was born on November 22, 1823 in Fredericksburg, Indiana, United States. Son of Nathaniel and Nancy (Furgeson) Kimball.

Education

Attended DePauw University, 1839-1841.

Career

Raised a company and served as captain 2d Indiana Regiment in Mexican War, 1846. Commissioned captain Indiana Militia, 1861. Helped raise 14th Indiana Regiment, became colonel.

Commissioned brigadier general United States Volunteers, 1862. In command V Army Corps at battles of Kernstown, Antietam, Fredericksburg. Had commanding division at siege of Vicksburg, 1863, Battle of Franklin, 1864.

Mustered out of service, 1865. Fought at Atlanta, Franklin and Nashville in charge IV Army Corps. Brevetted major general, 1865.

Helped organize Grand Army of Republic in Indiana, became commander. Elected treasurer, State of Indiana, 1866, 68. Member Indiana Legislature, 1872.

Surveyor general Utah, 1873.
