Commissioned brigadier general United States Volunteers, 1862.
In command V Army Corps at battles of Kernstown, Antietam, Fredericksburg. Had commanding division at siege of Vicksburg, 1863, Battle of Franklin, 1864.
Mustered out of service, 1865. Fought at Atlanta, Franklin and Nashville in charge IV Army Corps.
Brevetted major general, 1865.
Helped organize Grand Army of Republic in Indiana, became commander. Elected treasurer, State of Indiana, 1866, 68. Member Indiana Legislature, 1872.
