Editor with its publication. AS ociety of Alumni of the University of Virginia was formed in 1838. At their Annual Meeting in 1852, it was suggested, as a desideratum, that some fuller and more complete history of the Institution than any as yet extant should be compiled, and that the duty of its preparation might properly be assumed by the Society itself In the discussion which arose they were told, that the least known but not the least interesting portion of such history would be a narrative of the early efforts which led to its estah Ushment; and that this could not be written without the use of certain papers in the possession of the then Rector, who was himself a principal actor in those scenes. The correspondence between himself and Mr. Jefferson gave ample details of those efforts, and several judicious persons who had been favored with a perusal thought the letters worthy of separate publication. An informal request to that effect had heretofore been declined by Mr. Cabell, who thought that such a step would hardly be becoming in his life-time. On being again urged from this quarter, he gave a reluctant consent, with certain provisions. Not all of the letters related to the University. Nathaniel Francis Cabell was born on July 23, 1807. His father, Nicholas Cabell, Jr. , was a grandson of Dr. William Cabell of England, the emigrant ancestor of a distinguished family of Virginia, and his mother, Margaret Read (Venable) Cabell came from some of the most prominent families of southside Virginia. His father died when Nathaniel was an infant, and his mother reared him amid Presbyterian surroundings.
Cabell attended a Presbyterian college, Hampden Sidney, where he graduated in 1825. His great interest in religion in after life was probably due to the atmosphere in which he was reared. In 1827 he received his degree of bachelor of laws from Harvard College.
During 1827 - 1831, he was located in Prince Edward County, but in 1832 returned to "Warminster, " Nelson County, the place of his birth. A few years later he removed to the "Liberty Hall" estate, which he had inherited. The wide range of his interests may be seen in his voluminous writings, especially in the fields of religion, genealogy, and the history of agriculture. Largely through the influence of Richard K. Cralle of Lynchburg, friend and biographer of John C. Calhoun, he became a follower of Emanuel Swedenborg, being baptized into the New Church in 1842. During this period (1840 - 42) he had written in the New Jerusalem Magazine a number of articles, "Excerpts, or Readings with My Pencil, " etc. He also contributed to the New Churchman. Among his numerous religious writings may be mentioned an article on the New Christian Church in Israel D. Rupp's An Original History of the Religious Denominations at Present Existing in the United States (1844); Reply to Rev. Dr Pond's "Swedenborgianism Reviewed" (1848); A Letter on the Trinal Order for the Ministry of the New Church (1848, 1857); The Progress of Literature during the Preceding Century When Viewed from a Religious Standpoint (only the introductory chapter published, 1868); and papers on the theology of Paul, published under the title "Hor' Paulin'" in the New Jerusalem Messenger, 1873-74. In the meanwhile he was writing in other fields. He edited the Early History of the University of Virginia as Contained in the Letters of Thomas Jefferson and Joseph C. Cabell (1856); rearranged and edited in part "The Lee Papers" portions of which reappeared in seventeen numbers of the Southern Literary Messenger, 1858-60; and contributed to the Memoirs of Professor George Bush (1860). He contributed a number of essays on agriculture and on the history of agriculture in Virginia to the Farmers' Register and other magazines. It was his purpose to write a history of agriculture in Virginia. For that purpose he made a valuable collection of manuscripts on the subject. This material annotated by Cabell may now be found in the Virginia State Library. From 1832 until his death he collected much material relating to genealogy and prepared manuscript family memoirs, Cabelliana, Carringtoniana, etc.
The last few years of his life were spent in Bedford City at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. Kenna Campbell. He was buried in the Cabell cemetery at "Liberty Hall. "

In 1837, Cabell took the critical step in his journey of faith and left the Presbyterian Church.
He was married twice: on September 14, 1831 to Anne Blaws Cocke, and, after her death in 1862, to Mary M. Keller of Baltimore.
