He ran unsuccessfully as a provincial NDP candidate in 1971. Shillington was executive assistant to the Attorney-General from 1971 to 1975. Shillingon resigned his seat in 1999 to become a consultant, later moving to Calgary, Alberta.
He was a member of the Saskatchewan New Democratic Party and served in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan from 1975 to 1999.
