Negishi Tomoshichi

Background

Negishi Tomoshichi was born in a wealthy family in 1809, Saitama Prefecture, Japan.

Education

Studied under Hokuzan Yamamoto and later under Seikcn Terakado and was trained in swordsmanship by Shusaku Chiba, noted swordsman in Edo.

Career

Although he planned coups d'etat for the cause of the Meiji Restoration (1868), they all miscarried and he was imprisoned. Pardoned the following year, he preached Shintoism among the people of his native place.

Achievements

• Contributed to riparian works and relief of the destitute in the area.
