He designs for theatre, opera, film and television, and has been awarded the Helen Hayes Award and two Obie Awards for his work. Productions have included Side Manitoba on Broadway, Dead Manitoba’s Cell Phone, Oleanna, and Dinner with Friends. He is a graduate of Yale College and the University of California, San Diego.
Patel has designed productions for theater, opera and dance throughout the world.
Patel has designed at the Guthrie Theater, the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, the Steppenwolf Theater, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Gate Theatre, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music among many regional companies in the United States and abroad. His designs for opera include the world premieres of Bright Sheng’s Madame Mao at the Santa Fe Opera and David Carlson’s Anna Karenina at the Florida Grand Opera.
Both directed by Colin Graham. Production design for film includes Some Velvet Morning (film), Loitering with Intent (film) and Dil Dhadakne Do.
He designed Warren Leight’s Tony Award winning play Side Manitoba on Broadway, London"s West End, and the Kennedy Center. "night, Mother, Oleanna and (title of show) on Broadway and Donald Margulies" Pulitzer Prize winning Dinner With Friends off-Broadway and on national tour. Designs for television include the Peabody Award winning series In Treatment for Home Box Office and Neil Labute"s Billy and Billie for Direct Television. Patel has received the Helen Hayes Award, a Taking Office Award in 1996, numerous Drama Desk Award nominations, and is the recipient of two Obie Awards for Sustained Excellence in Secretariat Design.
Since 1997 he has been a member of Anne Bogart’s SITI Company.
