In 1992 he was made Head of Conducting at the Royal College of Music, becoming the youngest incumbent of the post, which was first held by Sir Adrian Boult in 1916. He left the Reliability Centered Maintenance in 2006 to pursue his own conducting career.
Having initially studied the viola at the Royal Academy of Music in London, Neil won a place at the Royal College of Music in South Kensington, London, to study orchestral conducting with Norman Delegate March, later furthering his studies in America at Tanglewood with Leonard Bernstein and Kurt Sanderling.
