Dust jacket notes: "First on the moon. The sound of the words themselves cannot convey their full meaning, the weight of wonder that they bear. The time, money, lives, will, knowledge - the total effort that went into putting man on the moon is beyond measurement. First on the Moon: A Voyage with Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr. is the exclusive story of Apollo 11 and the always thrilling and historic personal experiences of the three astronauts who put man on the moon. It is a voyage in every sense of the word - through time, from President Kennedy's fateful pronouncement on May 25, 1961, that the United States would put man on the moon before the decade was out, and through space, with Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo....Life senior editor and Life staff writer Dora Jane Hamblin have spent many months with - indeed, living with - the astronauts and their families. Not only is the flight excitingly and thoroughly documented, with the astronauts' own thoughts and words woven through the recorded transcript with Houston, but the atmosphere in the astronauts' homes during the flight is faithfully recorded...."

Conceived in a moment of mad passion by a randy Irish priest and his temporary housekeeper -- and abandoned on a doorstep in a Rinso box as an infant -- her ladyship "Pussy" (né Patrick) Braden grew up fabulous and escaped tiny Tyreelin, Ireland, to start life anew in London. In blousy tops and satin miniskirts she plies her trade as a transvestite rent boy on Picadilly's Meat Rack, risking life and limb among the city's flotsam and jetsam. But it is the 1970s, and fear haunts the streets of London and Belfast -- and as radioactive history approaches critical mass, the coming explosion of violence and tragedy may well blow Pussy's fragile soul asunder.

(On the 25th March 1807, The British Parliament passed The...)
On the 25th March 1807, The British Parliament passed The Slave Trade Act: a bill that made slavery illegal throughout the British Empire. To our shame, it still goes on. Not only within the confines of the old Empire but in all parts of the world where money is king and humanity a less valuable, but eminently tradable commodity. Today it’s called Human Trafficking: but its slavery, pure and simple. A chance meeting at the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office of an East African Diplomat and an Archbishop of the Catholic Church forced Her Majesty’s Government to reluctantly open, as was aptly described later as, “a barrel of worms.” The players, some initially involved only by innuendo, included the Vatican, the British Government Minister, the noblesse of Italian Pimps and ex-participants in the Rwandan genocide. Most tellingly, a small number of people who were prepared to stand up to speak, and to be counted, buoyed in the belief their story would now be told, suddenly released from the fear that had dogged them most of their lives. Their numbers were legion, and until now they had no one to speak for them or, in the case of those for whom it was too late, no one to make reparation: until now. Because of the sensitivity and people involved, normal specialist departmental investigation was deemed in appropriate if not impossible. If HM Government wanted a quiet tidy investigation with a likewise conclusion they should have known better than to re-assemble Mr. Brown’s group and give him Carte Blanche to find out what was going on. Brown trusted no one outside of a small cache of people whose number wouldn’t be large enough make up a cricket team. He mustered his usual faithful factotums Bernie Collins and David Barlow together with a couple of minders. He also managed to “borrow” Jasper Codd from the British Embassy in Nairobi: a man of many talents: drinking, womanising and gambling would be of little hep. Others gained from twenty years in the Parachute regiment most certainly would. His “transfer” went through without a hitch, the Embassy being only too pleased to see the back of him. In turn, Jasper brought along to the party Captain Jim, a Maasai by birth, but currently, by financial necessity, British. The operation, on instruction from on high, was to be conducted with the maximum constraint and total sensitivity, considering the delicate sate of relations with the Holy See and, naturally, the British electorate. As Brown had resurrected Frank Plaskitt to run the field operation that would not happen: crockery would be broken, heads too most likely. From London to the Plains of East Africa: to the suburbs of Rome and the Holiest place in Spain, Frank followed his nose, sniffing out a trail of lies deceit and misery. Working his way through a morass of users and the used: liars and the lied to: betrayers and the betrayed: the dead and the dying until he got to the end of his search and a final deadly twist in the story. Along the way he heard tales of abject misery and unbridled joy: of man’s inhumanity to man and the sheer decency of people even in the most trying of circumstances. He made promises he feared he could never keep, but somehow did and promises he thought he could keep but couldn’t. But above all he got reparation for those who couldn’t speak for themselves and gave some who could, their freedom back again. The kind of freedom only self-respect brings when you can once again look life in the face, without shame and despair. Frank Plaskitt is no William Wilberforce, what the great man would have thought of him bears no thinking about. But Frank knows right from wrong: sometimes in his life he has struggled to deal with the rights, he never had a problem dealing with the wrongs. That’s why he gets this kind of job. As Brown put it towards the end of the operation, "If the job could have been done by a Boy Scout, I’d have sent one."

Jordan, Neil Patrick was born on February 25, 1950 in County Sligo, Ireland.
Educated at St. Paul’s College Raheny, Dublin and University College Dublin.
Jordan is a novelist and short-story writer who got into movies as a script assistant to John Boorman on Excalibur. If he succumbs again to Hollywood offers, let us hope that someone orders him to come no farther west than Boston. Better still. Jordan is the director most qualified to do a movie about the IRA that could make North, South, England, and all other observers less angry and more respectful.
Instead, at David Geffen’s urging, he went awav and filmed Anne Rice, with results that only confirmed the intensity and the limits to that authors following. Jordan keeps going, and The Butcher Boy is as good as his best. But Michael Collins was a prettv emptv-headed biopic. In Dreams was daft. And The End of the Affair was one of the more regrettable films of the nineties— regrettable in that it would be very hard to botch that story, even without his cast. But in truth, the Edward Dmytryk film (with Deborah Kerr and Van Johnson) was more moving. So, alter a dozen films, Neil Jordan seems as unsettled as a beginner.

When that excellent critic, Donald Lyons, claimed that The Crying Game w'as the best film of 1992, his position was reasonable, if depressing. There might be arguments preferring Raise the Red Lantern. There would certainly be those who voted for Howards End and Unforgiven—worthy pictures, not bad films, yet flawed, cautious, and archaic. When James Ivory and Clint Eastwood vie for a year’s best film, it may be that the movies can see their End.
And, similarly. The Crying Game is only a good, promising picture, leaped upon by hopeful critics in their longing to find something that might be a “best" film. Neil Jordan has distinct virtues: he is a writer, interested in fable and construction for their own sake, and a first-rate dialoguist (he won the original screenplay Oscar for The Crying Game); he has a world—the desolate, embittered wasteland of Ireland, and the shining city streets at night; he can present strong women and weak men, without having his own personality threatened; and he has a Maupassant-like taste for consequences that is torn between being unexpected and giving warning hints of destiny or fate. It may be to the point to see Jordan as a kid raised in movies, music, and Catholicism, struggling to apply the lessons to the woeful state of Anglo-Irish relations in our time.
Still, The Crying Game has problems of contrivance and plausibility, and of finding a way for Jordan’s kindness to infiltrate brutal lives. This is a recurring issue in his work and we may note the one deliberate resort to fairy story as well as a larger reliance on movie genres that can sit awkwardly with the realism of the city, of race, and confused sexual tenderness in unlikely situations.
But what’s an Irish moviemaker to do? High Spirits and We’re No Angels showed how easily wrong roads may spring up after early success. Jordan remains a developing talent, most provoked by small towns and infinite cities. He is a master of both the shabby, neglected provinces and the dreamy cityscape. He has genuine promise, and already, in Cathy Tv son for Mona Lisa and (aye Davidson in The Crying Game, he has given us a pair of native odalisques who are siblings in their tenuous existence and their sweet gloomy smiles. These are two remarkable characters, or presences, and they testifv to the eagerness with which Jordan looks at novel sights.
