Nensai studied under Hokuzan Yamamoto. His book titled Sentetsu Sodan (Talks On Men of Wisdom), published in 1816 was well received by the public and won a prize from the Shogunate. He participated in the compilation of a history of the Tokugawa Shogunate at the recommendation of Jutsusai Hayashi, director of the Shoheiko (Shogunate College).
