Nicholas Campbell Clarke was born on June 9, 1948, in Godalming.
Nick Clarke attended Westbourne House School. Later he studied at Bradfield College and at Fitzwilliam College.
After graduation, Nick Clarke took up a post of a journalist at the Yorkshire Evening Post. He worked there for two years and in 1973 he started to work at the BBC as Northern Industrial Correspondent. He then joined The Money Programme and eventually joined Newsnight in 1984. In 1994 he presented Radio 4's lunchtime news program called The World at One and remained its leading voice for 12 years. During the 1991 Gulf War he was a volunteer presenter on the BBC Radio 4 News FM service. He also worked as a host of the Round Britain Quiz, the debate series Straw Poll.
In 1999 Nick Clarke wrote the book about the writer and journalist Alistair Cooke. He won the Broadcasting Press Guild award in 2001. In December 2005, Nick was diagnosed with cancer, which led to the amputation of his left leg. During this time he documented his experiences with the disease for an audio diary that was broadcast on Radio 4 in June 2006. He returned to hosting The World at One program in August 2006, however, last known appearance on the show was on 12 September. He died on 23 November 2006.

1999Nick Clarke married Susan Katharine Armstrong on October 13, 1973. They had three children.
In 1991 Clarke divorced his wife Sue and married Barbara Want. She bore him two sons.
